Did you know that your skin is your largest organ? It is, and it does some pretty important things. Your skin protects the inside of your body, for example. Your skin is also instrumental in regulating your body temperature and acting as a filter for pollutants. When your skin is healthy, it’s better prepared to withstand the signs of aging, heal quicker, and protect you from disease compared to unhealthy skin.

Figure Out Your Skin Type

To make sure your skin is healthy, it’s important for you to create – and stick to – a daily skin care routine. Before you can do that, however, you must identify your skin type. Here is a list of skin types and a description of each to help you figure out what kind of skin you have:

  • Dry Skin: Dry skin is often flaky, rough or even scaly.
  • Oily Skin: Large pores are a sign that you have oily skin. If your skin is shiny or greasy, it may also signal that you have oily skin.
  • Combination Skin: Combination skin is exactly what its name implies. If your skin is dry in some spots but oily in others, you have combination skin.
  • Sensitive Skin: If your skin burns, itches or stings when you use certain products, it’s likely that you have sensitive skin.
  • Normal Skin: Normal skin is well-balanced, clear and not overly sensitive.

Use a Cleanser That’s Appropriate for Your Skin Type

Avoid using just any cleanser to clean your face. Use one that’s appropriate for your skin type instead. Don’t scrub your face in a harsh manner. Apply a gentle cleanser to your face with your fingertips, rinse thoroughly with warm water and pat your face dry.

Exfoliate Regularly

Exfoliating your skin regularly is essential to keeping your skin healthy. In general, exfoliating just once or twice per week is sufficient to keep your skin in good shape. Be sure you use a pH-neutral exfoliating product because it will maintain your skin’s balance as it smooths and purifies your skin.

Moisturize, Moisturize, Moisturize

Regardless of your age, you need to moisturize your skin every day. This is true even if your skin is oily. You should apply your moisturizer when your skin is still slightly damp after cleansing to seal in moisture. If you’re prone to breakouts or your skin is oily, use a lightweight, oil-free moisturizer to prevent it from blocking your pores.

Use Sunscreen

It doesn’t matter what season it is or if it’s sunny or cloudy outside. You should use sunscreen that has an SPF of 30 or more every single day. It takes as little as 15 minutes for the sun to damage your skin at any time of the year so using sunscreen and reapplying it throughout each day is vital to your skin’s well-being.
