My name is Toni Slack and I am the Admissions Director and the Nail Tech Instructor. I have been the Admissions Director at SCBC since the end of December 2009 and the Nail tech Instructor since April of 2009.

I was born and raised in Milwaukee and my husband and I moved up to Wausau in June of 2008, because we wanted to move from the city. I have 2 daughters Candice who still lives in Milwaukee and Lynda who lives next door to us in our duplex.

I received my Cosmetology license in 1988 from IBA School of Cosmetology and upon graduation decided to learn more about nails. I took as many classes as I could and searched out people in Milwaukee that were already in the business. I worked for a nail salon in Glendale for 5 years and then decided to open my own salon in Shorewood called Hands Up!  Hands Up was a full service nail salon and during the 12 years that I owned and worked there I built it nothing into 6 nail techs and two tanning beds. While owning Hands Up I was able to discover my love of teaching by being able to train new nail techs that I hired.

Once I discovered I enjoyed teaching I decided to go back to college and enrolled at Alverno College. I finished my Bachelors degree in 2004 and the whole time I was in college I was able to keep my salon going and prospering with the help of a nail tech that worked with me for years. So when I decided to teach in the school system I handed down my salon to this nail tech and she is still in the same location to this day.

I taught for a half a year in a Muslim school in Milwaukee and then for 3 years in an inner city school. While at the second school I had the opportunity to jump into an administrative role and loved it! Back to Alverno I went to get my Masters in Administrative Leadership and Director of Instruction. I completed my Masters in May of 2009.

I was exploring Wausau one day and passed SCBC and said to my husband, “I can teach there!” I turned in my resume’ to Mrs. Burns and then called her a few times. She gave me an interview and started training me as the nail tech instructor.  I received my Instructor’s license in 2009 and worked part time here. Then I got the phone call from Mrs. Burns that brought me full time into the industry that I stated in and loved! Knowing nothing about college admissions, I took the position and began on this journey learning about this wonderful position. I have now become part of a team and organization that I love! Every minute of everyday there is change, one minute I am able to be a teacher, the next an administrator, then a nail tech, and next I am helping a new student fulfill their dreams and passion by signing them up for college. I was able to join a group of people here at SCBC that are passionate and truly care about the students that attend and I will be forever thankful for getting the chance to go full circle in my life and come back to the industry that I love!
