Our Wausau beauty college is a privately owned, nationally accredited beauty school that’s served aspiring beauty professionals for over 25 years! Now under new ownership, State College of Beauty Culture is eager to continue training in-demand beauty skills to help students achieve their career goals. Our Mission
State College of Beauty Culture’s intent, purpose, and principle objectives focus on two areas:
- To provide and nurture a basic fundamental beauty education where graduation and State licensure are the result.
- To develop and enhance proficient, professional skills and knowledge necessary to achieve success and prepare graduates for careers in cosmetology arts and sciences.

Our staff has decades of professional experience in the beauty industry, and we’re passionate about sharing our skills and knowledge with the next generation of beauty professionals. Our comprehensive curriculum includes classroom instruction and hands-on practice opportunities, preparing students to join the industry and achieve their goals. We tailor our curriculum to the needs of each student, allowing them time to build up foundational knowledge before helping them refine the skills they love doing the most.
Meet the Owners: Elinor & Harold Mittlestat
We are a military family with five children and a deep love for Wisconsin! After living in many different places we have chosen Wausau to be our forever home. With the purchase of State College of Beauty Culture we have fulfilled Elinor’s lifelong dream of running a beauty college. She has always been in the hair industry and has expertise as a cosmetologist, Manager, District Manager, and Trainer. Elinor will use her experience to bring State College of Beauty Culture forward in its next chapter of growth. We are both very excited to be a part of this special community!

No, no experience is necessary. You do need to have an interest in beauty and the ability to work with diverse clients. We’ll help you learn the rest! You can find a complete list of admission requirements here.
How long it takes you to complete your training depends on your course and schedule. Some courses only require 300 clock hours, while others require more time to cover a wider range of skills. It’s possible to move from classroom to career in less than a year, and we would love to be part of your beauty school journey.
Yes, financial aid is available to those who qualify. Financial aid can come in the form of grants, loans, and more. There may also be scholarships you can apply for to help cover the cost of your education.
