How You Can Stay Up-to-date After You Graduate from Cosmetology School

Are you brimming with creativity and love to work with your hands? If you’re artistic, dexterous, and enjoy interacting with people, you may have all the basics necessary to pursue a career as a sought-after cosmetologist. All that’s left for you to do is enroll in cosmetology classes and earn your state license.

One of the reasons people are interested in becoming a cosmetologist these days is job growth. Whereas job growth is stagnant in other verticals, employment in the cosmetology industry is expected to grow by 13 percent between 2016 and 2026.

Tips to Stay on Top of the Latest Trends

While you’ll need to complete extensive training and earn a license to “cash in” on the ever-expanding cosmetology industry’s employment growth, your education won’t end when your classes wrap up. For you to be as successful as possible, you’ll need to stay up-to-date with the latest trends throughout your career.

Although you can certainly pick up some new skills and techniques in continuing education classes, you can do more to constantly improve your craft. By continuing to learn new things even after you’ve established a loyal clientele, you’ll position yourself to be a trendsetter instead of someone who’s simply trying to keep up.

Attend Trade Shows

Trade shows typically offer many opportunities to learn about new products and styling techniques. They’re also great places to learn about different brands and meet other people in your profession who may be able to teach you a few things. Even if a trade show isn’t scheduled close to home any time soon, you should still make plans to attend at least one show (preferably more) per year.

Read Cutting-edge Style Magazines

Style magazines are a wonderful resource for any cosmetologist who wants to stay abreast of new trends in his or her industry. The key is to identify the magazines that are relevant to the members of your target market. Clearly, if your clients consist largely of members of a youthful Goth community, you should probably read magazines that are different from a cosmetologist whose clientele base is mostly non-Goth senior citizens.

Follow Industry Influencers on Social Media

To stay up-to-date in your field, it’s wise to follow industry influencers on social media. If you don’t already have accounts on the platforms, you should start your search for influencers on Instagram and YouTube by setting up accounts on each social site. As you research the influencers who are relevant to your clientele, you’ll come across macro and micro influencers who discuss all sorts of topics related to cosmetology, such as skincare, makeup, and hairstyling.

Here are some of the influencers you may want to check out and subsequently follow:

●      Lauren Gores

●      Kuu Kivelä

●      Rin Rodriguez

●      Cohl

●      Manny Gutierrez

●      James Charles

●      Em Ford
